Winnebago Recall 23V-663 & Roamrig Upgrades
Share
This winter, 2nd and 3rd generation Winnebago Revel owners received a notice about safety recall 23V-663. If you have any RoamRig upgrades or are considering an upgrade, here are a few big FAQs about how the recall affects you.
NOTE: Winnebago verbiage about Revel generations is DIFFERENT from RoamRig verbiage about generations. This blog uses ROAMRIG verbiage for Generations because it makes more sense in the overall scope of Revels.
What RoamRig calls a 2nd generation Revel is a 1st generation lithium Revel in Winnebago’s documentation. What RoamRig says is a 3rd generation Revel is a 2nd generation lithium revel in Winnebago’s documentation.
What does the recall do?
- 2nd Generation: secure/protect stock battery cables, secure battery shelf, check ground on vehicle chassis
- 3rd Generation: secure/protect stock battery cables, secure battery shelf, check ground on vehicle chassis, add new alternator regulator and regulator harness that is meant to prevent thermal runaway of the Balmar 170XT alternator that comes installed on the Revel from Winnebago.
What if I have a 2nd generation Revel with RoamRig upgrades?
There’s no harm in going to a dealer for them to check what has been done so they can officially take the recall off your vehicle record.
What if I have a 3rd generation Revel with RoamRig upgrades?
-
If you only have a reprogrammed regulator and everything else is stock: the recall will replace your regulator with a different one. The updated regulator may perform better than the original one which you had us reprogram.
-
If you have a reprogrammed regulator AND larger alternator: the recall will replace your regulator with a different one. The updated regulator will NOT limit the output of the 250A alternator. The main 250A circuit breaker may trip because of this. The batteries are also not rated for this much charge current. The replacement regulator from Winnebago must be reprogrammed to limit alternator output.
- If you have a full RoamRig power system: The architecture of the back of your van is so different from stock Revels that Winnebago may not work on it. If they want to do work on the van, please ask them what they plan on installing and reach out to us first for advice.
Can Roamrig do the recall work on my van?
Yes. RoamRig is a Winnebago-authorized recall repair center. If you’re interested in coming here for the recall, let us know.
Should I have the recall done before I have my alternator and/or regulator modified on my 3rd generation Revel?
Yes, that is the easiest way to prevent an issue caused by Winnebago’s work happening after a RoamRig update.
